A new phase video… this time using a little snip of footage of a cab that I captured in Melbourne, married with some brassy synth sounds. The usual process was used as per below, but this time trying out a hexagon shape, which at times makes the cab appear to be driving in a loop around the screen.
An audio/video composition experiment. Each slice of the hexagon plays the same 2-second loop of footage, however all play at slightly different speeds. Each is assigned a note, which corresponds to the passing taxi. There are only 2 moments when all 6 slices line up - the very beginning and the very end. In between, interesting patterns emerge from the chaos as the loops work their way toward the final goal. I’m fascinated by the musical phase experiments of Steve Reich and others, and this experiment is an attempt to visually elucidate the auditory patterns that occur in this style of musical composition.
